Two Holiday Films Reviewed Fast And Fair

I fell asleep during a Christmas cartoon and I’m not even sorry. Santa’s Apprentice has the ingredients for a sweet holiday story, but the pacing drags, the premise feels oddly put together, and the whole thing lands more “background noise” than family movie night. I break down what doesn’t work, why it bored me, and where it ends up on my Christmas rating scale versus my general movie scale.
Then we jump to the total surprise of the week: Tokyo Godfathers. It’s an anime film I didn’t expect to like, especially after spotting a few modern “check the box” moments that had me skeptical going in. But the story won me over with momentum, heart, and a fascinating chain of events that many people would call coincidence. I talk about how the movie frames those connections and why it left me thinking about providence, purpose, and whether God orchestrates our steps even when life looks messy.
You’ll also hear my final ratings for both movies, plus a look ahead as we near the end of this massive Christmas list. Next up, I’m watching Paddington 2 (one of my all-time favorites) and I’m reviewing the classic White Christmas with Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye. If you like honest Christmas movie reviews, anime recommendations, and quick-hit ratings that help you choose what to watch, subscribe, share the show, and leave a review. Santa’s Apprentice Review And Ratings
Tokyo Godfathers Surprise Hit
What’s Next Paddington And White Christmas
SPEAKER_01Hello everyone, welcome to a brand new episode of The Couch Critics. I'm your host, Nathan, and on today's episode it's just me. And this is gonna be an extremely short but sweet episode because both these movies were kind of interesting. So, first up, I'm talking about Santa's Apprentice as a cartoon. And number one, I fell asleep during it, so that should tell you something. And number two, this movie was just weird. I didn't really understand what was going on, I didn't understand the whole premise of the movie. Obviously, Santa's looking for an apprentice, hence the name Santa's apprentice. And one kid thinks that he should be the apprentice, and so he's like a bully kind of kid. And then you have the kind-hearted kid, and yeah, I didn't like it. I thought it was boring. The voice acting was not that great. It was just not a movie that I would sit down with my kids and watch. It's just really, really boring. And like I said, this is gonna be a short but sweet episode because you know, when I record by myself, these episodes aren't that long. So Santa's Apprentice for a Christmas movie, I'd give it maybe a 3.5, maybe a four because you know it's about Santa and Christmas and stuff. And then for a general movie, I'm gonna give it a 1.5 out of five because it's not a movie that I could see myself watching again. And the second movie I'm gonna be talking about was another movie that I thought was gonna be really interesting. Didn't really know what I was gonna think of it, and I was actually pleasantly surprised. It's Tokyo Godfathers. This is an anime movie, so Japanese animation. And like I said, I was pleasantly surprised. There are some check the box moments in this film. One of the characters is a transgender male, trans woman, I guess. So that right there is a big check the box moment. But what I really thought was interesting about this movie is this movie is all about how God orchestrates all of our steps, He is in control of everything because every moment in this movie is what some people would call a coincidence, like one thing after another that people are connecting with each other after a long time not seeing each other. It's just a really surprisingly good movie. And I was very surprised because when I saw it on my list, I didn't know what it was about. And then I did some research and then I rolled my eyes because again, the check the box moment. But like I said, it surprised me. I really liked it. I don't know if I could recommend it to everyone, but I really did think this was a pretty good movie. So I'm gonna give Tokyo Godfathers for a Christmas movie. I'm gonna give it maybe a 3.5. It's not on the nose a Christmas movie. Christmas is mentioned, they find a baby on Christmas Eve. So there's that. And then for a general rating, I'm gonna give it a four out of five. I thought it was a good movie. Again, it's one of those films on this list that I would never have probably watched if it was not on this list. Well, folks, we're getting down to the last row of Christmas movies on this Christmas list. We're almost done with this list of Christmas films. I can't believe I've gone through almost a hundred Christmas movies already. So next week we're gonna be doing what I think is interesting. I love these movies. Actually, I only really like the second one. And it's the Paddington series. It's not a Christmas movie already. I can already tell you that. But it's one of those films. There's been a couple of these that people say, well, it makes you feel all warm and cozy, which it does. And I will only be watching Paddington 2 because the first one's okay, even though it's kind of borderline creepy because Nicole Kimmon's character wants to literally kill Paddington. And the third one, I didn't think was that great. So I'm gonna watch the second one. It's one of my favorite movies of all time, actually. Then I can already tell you what I'm gonna give it for general rating. And then I'm also gonna be reviewing White Christmas, the Bing Crosby and Danny Kay Christmas classic White Christmas next Sunday on the Couch Critics. Where every movie gets its close up.
