Why Curse Of The Swamp Creature Fails At Every Turn

Season 5 Episode 83

"Send us a Text!"

A random spin landed us in the Florida Everglades, where oil hunters, a mad doctor, and an alligator-human hybrid promise pulpy thrills—and deliver a masterclass in what not to do. From the first muddy frame to the last baffling creature reveal, we break down how Curse of the Swamp Creature squanders a great setup with incoherent plotting, cardboard performances, and a finale that rewrites its own rules. If you’ve ever wondered why some B-movies charm while others just limp, this review maps the difference with clear, actionable lessons on suspense, pacing, and practical effects.

We start with quick show updates—video and audio are both here to stay, with new episodes on Sundays and Thursdays—then dive into the film’s synopsis, cast notes, and the many ways continuity collapses. The supposed slow-burn delay of the monster reveal never earns its keep, because the movie forgets to build tension: no unsettling clues, no smart blocking, no sonic signatures. Add in a snake-worship subplot that goes nowhere and character deaths that don’t stick, and the result is confusion instead of dread. We talk about the value of commentary-friendly “bad” films, why this one misses the so-bad-it’s-good mark, and how group viewing can sometimes salvage the experience.

To reset the palate, we preview a cozy double feature—It Happened on Fifth Avenue and Jumanji—before gearing up for a focused sci-fi action run with Predator, Predator 2, and Prey ahead of Predator Badlands. That pivot highlights a larger point: randomness can be fun, but curated marathons reveal how genre evolves, from sound design to creature logic. If you love horror, cult cinema, or just the craft of making thrills work on a budget, you’ll find practical takeaways and a few laughs at the swamp’s expense. Subscribe, share with a friend who loves monster mayhem, and drop your favorite so-bad-it’s-good recommendation in the comments—we might queue it up next.

SPEAKER_01:

I'm your host Nathan and this is our first video movie review. But I did say on our social media accounts that we would no longer be doing audio-only podcasting, and that's not true. So we will be releasing video and audio only podcast episodes from now on, and a little bit more information or updates is that we are not going to do the back and forth cinema Saturday, cinema Sunday. It will strictly be cinema Sundays from now on. And one more new update is that we will no longer be releasing episodes on Tuesdays. We'll actually be releasing them on Thursdays. So you'll have a new episode every Thursday and Sunday. So that way you'll have a little bit of a break in between, but it'll also give us more time to record more episodes at a time because we have found that trying to record has been kind of tricky. And so I don't want it just to be me like this episode is in the near future. So that is our new release schedule. Sundays only for cinema Sundays and for our Christmas classic reviews. You can be looking for those on Thursdays. So just wanted to give you a few updates before I get into what we're gonna be talking about today. Now, I'm gonna warn you right now that this episode is just a filler. You'll you'll understand what I mean by that. When I tell you the movie, I'm gonna be reviewing because it was pretty interesting. Now, once again, I was able to do a prime roulette, which means I just press a button, it picks a random movie for me to watch, and I watch it. It's actually been pretty helpful when there's been gaps in between film movies that I'm going to see in theaters. So it's been kind of helpful. So last week, Thomas and I reviewed Home Front. So if you haven't listened to that, that is audio only. If you haven't listened to that, go ahead and listen on wherever you listen to your podcast for that review. And unfortunately, I skipped Tuesday's episode because I didn't have time to record it with anybody. So that will be a double feature this Tuesday will be a double feature of It Happened on Fifth Avenue and Jumanji, because Jumanji is on my Christmas list for some reason. So let's dive into Curse of the Swamp Creature. I decided to do a Halloween movie before you know we get deep into other films. Because I I am a fan of like monster movies and horror movies and stuff like that. I am a fan, even though nowadays with kids I have to be more careful about what I watch. So there is that. The synopsis. While searching for oil in the deadly swamp lands of the Florida Everglades, members of a geological expedition meet an insane doctor who is working on an experiment to create a creature that is part man and part alligator. Curse of the Swamp Creature stars Jan, John Agar, Francine York, Jeff Alexander, and Shirley McLean. Not McLean, Shirley McLean. So this is your typical old school B movie monster film that you would probably see during a mystery science theater 3000 kind of thing where the people talk over it and make fun of it though almost the entire time. I was tempted to do that because that's how bad this movie was. This movie was really bad. It was shot terribly, the script was terrible, the acting was terrible. Again, it's your typical 1960s B movie horror film. And it's also one of those typical ones that doesn't show the big monster until like near the very end of the movie. And when it's revealed, it's pretty uh it's pretty bad. If you follow us on our social media platforms, you'll see kind of what the creature is going to look like. And it it's it's pretty bad. Like I said, this this movie is definitely a filler. There's not much good I'm going to say about this movie. It's not even one of those movies that it's so bad it's good. It's just really, really bad. And it was very confusing because some of the actors were playing characters and then they made it seem like that character had died, but then but the character was still alive, but they were talking about the character like they were dead. And it got very confusing. And then, of course, towards the end, when they finally reveal the monster, the whole film, this insane doctor, is basically killing men to create this creature that is half man, half alligator. Well, spoiler, because you're not gonna want to watch this movie, the last person he does the experiment on is a woman, and when the creature comes to life, it looks like a big honking man in a really weird costume, and it just it just didn't it didn't make any sense. And the side story, there was a I guess there was a side story where there's these people who worship snakes for some reason, and they do really weird weird dances, and one of the guys tries to attack one of the women. It was just yeah, it was a very strange movie, it didn't make any sense whatsoever. I did fall asleep, which is normal nowadays, I guess. I fall asleep during movies. I did fall asleep during this movie, and it was mostly because it was very hard to follow, and it was very boring. Also, it was very late when I watched it. So I did finish it, which is why I why I know that the creature doesn't show up until the very end, because I fell asleep before seeing the creature, and so I was like, I have to go, I have to see this thing, and it was it was bad, it was very bad, very dumb movie. Don't don't watch it. This is gonna be a short but sweet review. There's again, there's nothing good about this movie, nothing, nothing at all. I'm I keep on trying to think of something, and there's not a thing, so I'm just gonna leave it at that. Curse of the Swamp Creature is bad, and I'm gonna give it a 0.5 out of five. That's how bad this movie is. But again, I I think it would be more enjoyable as a mystery science theater 3000 kind of movie, which I kind of now want to see if there is one, because I'm sure there is, but that's that's all I can really give this movie is a really bad review of a 0.5 out of five. And so this Tuesday on The Couch Critics, we're gonna be doing a double feature. It happened on Fifth Avenue and Jumanji, and then next cinema Sunday, we're starting to get back into the movies that I'm gonna go see. And the way we're gonna do that is I'm gonna be watching Predator, Predator 2, and Prey because Predator Badlands is coming out, and so that's the next in-theater movie I'm gonna go see, but I have to prepare for it. So next week I'll be watching three movies and rating them all. We shall see. I think I've only seen the first Predator movie. I don't think I've ever seen the one with Danny Glover, and I think I watched a little bit of Prey, but we'll see. So we shall see how those movies are to prepare for Predator Badlands on next cinema Sunday on The Couch Critics, where every movie gets its close-up.
