A Former Assassin Returns: Exploring the High-Octane World of Nobody 2

Season 5 Episode 68

"Send us a Text!"

Action fans, prepare for another adrenaline-fueled ride with Bob Odenkirk in Nobody 2! The Better Call Saul star proves once again he's got serious action chops as Hutch Mansell, the seemingly ordinary suburban dad with extraordinary skills. When what should have been a peaceful family vacation turns into a violent confrontation with the past, we're treated to a rollercoaster of high-octane sequences and dark humor that builds on the unexpected success of the original film.

This sequel brings back the John Wick-esque action with a distinctive comedic tone that sets it apart in the crowded action thriller landscape. Christopher Lloyd joins the cast as Hutch's father, though his screen time feels somewhat limited compared to what the trailer promised. Sharon Stone takes on villain duties as Lendina, with a performance that occasionally veers into excessive territory. Meanwhile, Colin Hanks makes an appearance that might contain a clever nod to his father's iconic Toy Story role.

What makes Nobody 2 work is Odenkirk's committed performance and the film's unpretentious approach to delivering entertainment. The storyline cleverly mirrors classic vacation comedies before turning them on their head with assassin backstories and samurai-skilled adopted brothers. While heavy on profanity and violence, it delivers exactly what action fans crave – impressive fight choreography, unexpected humor, and a protagonist you can't help but root for. Whether you've seen the original or not, Nobody 2 stands on its own as a solid 3.5/5 star experience that knows exactly what it wants to be. Have you checked it out yet? Let us know your thoughts and if you think it lives up to the original!

The weekend's here. It's time to unwind. Grab your snacks, leave the week behind. Blockbusters classics, they're all on the way. Let's kick it off with Cinema Saturdays.

Speaker 2:

Hello everybody and welcome to a brand new Cinema Saturday episode of the Couch Critic. I'm recording on time, probably just because it's by myself. On today's episode I'm talking about Nobody 2, the sequel to Nobody. Before I can talk about my likes and dislikes about this newest film, I have to go over the synopsis about this newest film. I have to go over the synopsis. Suburban dad Hutch Mansell, a former lethal assassin, is pulled back into his violent past after thwarting a home invasion, setting off a chain of events that unravels secrets about his wife Becca's past and his own.

Speaker 2:

Nobody 2 stars Bob Odenkirk, Connie Nielsen, christopher Lloyd and John Ortiz. So obviously I saw the first one. The only reason I wanted to go see it is because I was slightly intrigued. I think it was around the time that I had just finished Better Call Saul, which starred Bob Odenkirk, and I really liked that show, and I saw the trailer of this. It kind of reminded me of John Wick a little bit, but a more comedic tone, and I liked the first one pretty good. I don't remember being wowed by it, but I enjoyed it for what it was and I felt kind of the same with this one. It wasn't anything special, it wasn't like a wow moment, but it was a fun action film, there's something to get out of the house to go see. And I didn't have really anything lined up on my movie list, so I just said I kind of closed my eyes and pointed, and there it was. So there wasn't really. I mean, like I said, there wasn't really anything special about it. I think one of the biggest things I didn't like was the.

Speaker 2:

The villain was played by sharon stone. She plays lindina and I thought she was just a little bit over the top. She went a little bit over the top with the evilness of the character. Another person that was in this movie was Colin Hanks, who is the son of Tom Hanks. There was a little joke I don't know if it was supposed to be like a little nod to the fact that his father played a toy cowboy in Toy Story. But Bob Odenkirk's character calls him officer and he's like well, that's sheriff, and I didn't know if that was supposed to be a little nod to that. But other than that, I mean there's not much to say about this movie.

Speaker 2:

John Ortiz is in it. I don't really remember him for anything else. He's like one of those people that looks familiar. He apparently was in Silver Linings Playbook at one point, I guess. So I guess that's where I remember him.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, this is going to be a really short episode. I kind of am okay with that because last Cinema Sunday, slash Tuesday episode was like almost an hour long. So I'm kind of okay with this being a kind of short episode. But, like I said, it was fun. I thought the action was fun. Bob Odenkirk, I think, is a really good actor and he plays this part really well.

Speaker 2:

The synopsis says that it really dives into his wife's past. I think I missed that. I don't think I fell asleep during it. I stayed awake during the whole thing, but it seemed to really lean heavy on Bob Odenkirk's past. And Christopher Lloyd plays his father, which I thought was cool that they had Christopher Lloyd in it and the trailer it made it seem like he was going to be in it more and he was going to play a bigger part, which he kind of didn't in the movie, which I was kind of disappointed with.

Speaker 2:

But it kind of dove into why they end up going to the place they go to, because the whole setup is that he finally gets to go on vacation with his family and he wants to go somewhere that he went to as a child and it's kind of it kind of harkened back to the chevy chase movie vacation, taking his family to this place that he thinks is going to be this big deal, and then come to find out it was actually a place that his father took him because his father used to be an assassin too. So it was kind of a setup and all that you know fun stuff. And then he has like an adopted brother who's like a samurai guy, which I thought was kind of cool. But it was just really random and it's not something that I'd be like hey, go see this. But I also wouldn't be like, hey, skip it. If you like action movies, I think you would enjoy this. There is a ton of bad language in it, so I can't really recommend it on that front. But other than that, like I said a million times in this episode, it was just a fun popcorn action flick. So if that's what you're looking for, if you're looking for something else out there, maybe give it a try.

Speaker 2:

If you haven't seen the first one, I think you don't really have to have seen the first one to really fully appreciate and understand this it's. It kind of is a standalone. Unless you want to go in already knowing who this character is, then maybe watch the first one. I was going to watch the first one out before I recorded this, but I just never got around to it. So those are my thoughts on Nobody 2.

Speaker 2:

I would give this movie maybe a 3.5 out of 5. Like I said, it didn't really wow me that much, but it was still a fun action flick. So those are my thoughts on that. And then this Tuesday, I believe, katie Mitch and myself will be talking about Catch Me If you Can, which again is a movie that I don't really understand why it's there. And then this Cinema Sunday I'm going to be talking about Caught Stealing, the new Austin Butler movie, which again, I'm seeing it because there's nothing really on my main movie list that's coming out, so that is why I'm watching that. On next Cinema Sunday, on the couch critics, where every movie gets its close-up.

Speaker 1:

Lights are low, the screens are glow, but we'll go. Only movies know Popcorn's popping. It's time to stay. Let's escape with Cinemalist Saturdays. So grab a seat, let the credits play. We'll see you next for Cinemalist Saturdays.
