F1 Thrills vs Megan 2.0 Chills: A Double Feature Review

Season 5 Episode 53

"Send us a Text!"

Racing engines and rogue AI battle for supremacy in this week's double feature review on Cinema Saturdays. Buckle up as we take you through Brad Pitt's adrenaline-pumping "F1" and the underwhelming horror sequel "Megan 2.0" - two films that couldn't be more different in quality and execution.

"F1" emerges as a masterclass in immersive filmmaking, capturing the intensity of Formula One racing through stunning IMAX cinematography that puts viewers directly in the driver's seat. The film follows a retired driver (Pitt) who returns to mentor a promising young talent in a compelling story about second chances and competitive spirit. What makes this film truly special is how it creates a shared theatrical experience - audiences laughing, gasping, and applauding together as the drama unfolds on screen. With standout performances from Damson Idris, Javier Bardem, and Kerry Condon supporting Pitt's lead role, "F1" earns a perfect five-star rating and demands to be seen on the biggest screen possible.

Meanwhile, "Megan 2.0" demonstrates how sequels often falter when trying to reinvent their villains. Following creator Gemma (Allison Williams) as she resurrects the murderous AI doll to combat a military-grade weapon built with stolen technology, the film attempts a "Terminator 2"-style hero transformation that simply doesn't work. Even with Flight of the Conchords' Jemaine Clement bringing brief moments of charm before his untimely exit, the film struggles with boring pacing, eye-rolling dialogue, and characters who remain fundamentally unlikable. A single clever plot twist isn't enough to save this sequel from earning a disappointing 2.0-star rating.

Speaker 1:

The weekend's here. It's time to unwind. Grab your snacks, leave the week behind. Blockbusters classics, they're all on the way. Let's kick it off with Cinema Saturdays.

Speaker 2:

Hello everyone and welcome to a Cinema Saturday episode of the Couch Critic. I'm your host, nathan Nathan, and on today's episode I'm doing a double feature. I'm taking on F1 and Megan 2.0. So let's get right into it with our first movie, f1. The Movie, or the original title, f1.

Speaker 2:

Before I can talk about my likes and dislikes of this movie, I have to go over the synopsis. A Formula One driver comes out of retirement to mentor and team up with a younger driver. F1 stars Brad Pitt, damson, idris, javier Bardem and Carrie Cundon. So I apparently have a thing for racing movies. So I was a big fan of Gran Turismo based on the PlayStation game. I was a fan of Rush that Katie and I reviewed, I believe, last season. You can go back and listen to that review. We both enjoyed that movie.

Speaker 2:

I guess I just like racing movies. They're very intense, they're very well acted, the stories are always compelling. This movie was filmed with IMAX cameras, so it immerses you into the driver's seat of every car that's being driven, and I just thoroughly enjoyed this movie. There's nothing really about this movie that I did not like. There were some moments that you didn't know who you're supposed to be rooting for, whether it was the Brad Pitt character or the other character which, by the way, the last name of the main driver is Pierce, and that is actually my last name as well. So that was kind of cool. It was just a really, really interesting, compelling movie. This was a fun movie to go see in theaters with an audience that was also getting really into some moments. They were laughing at parts, they were clapping at parts. It was just a really fun film to watch in a movie theater. So F1, again, there's nothing I did not like about this movie, so I would highly recommend it. I'm going to give it a five out of five stars.

Speaker 2:

Yes, this is a short but sweet episode because I got to talk about two movies, so of course there's got to be the movie that I like, which was F1. And now let's talk about the second movie I'm going to be talking about, and that is, unfortunately, megan 2.0. Now, my movie list of movies that I'm seeing in theaters is just very all over the place, just like with some of the christmas movies I'm talking about on tuesdays. But this is the sequel to megan, and let's let me just go into the synopsis. Sure, two years after Megan's rampage, her creator, gemma, resorts to resurrecting her infamous creation in order to take down Amelia, the military-grade weapon who was built by a defense contractor who stole Megan's underlying tech.

Speaker 2:

Megan 2.0 stars Allison Williams, ivana Sakhno, jenna Davis and Jemaine Clement, which, if you don't know who that is Flight of the Conchords. He's a very funny guy. I was actually really excited to see him in this movie because I just think he's really fun. Everything I see him in just makes me smile, so that could be a highlight for this movie that he's in this film. Unfortunately spoiler he does die, so I was like oh, really my favorite character in the entire movie.

Speaker 2:

You could kill them off, say, the terminator 2 route, and if you know this terminator movies, the first terminator, arnest orsinger, plays an evil robot who's on a mission to kill sir kama. And then the second one, he comes back as this different version of the same robot and now his, his mission is to save john carter john kama, not john carter. So they were kind of going that route with this movie and it didn't really work for it. Though because of how evil Megan was in the first one and you to me, you still don't like the character of Gemma. She's not a good role model for her niece. Role model for her niece. She had to basically adopt her niece because her niece's parents I guess her sister or her brother, one or the other passed away in the first movie and she was not a good guardian in the first film at all. And by the end of the movie you're like I really hope she gets arrested and sent to jail and you find out that didn't happen and she starts being a spokesperson against AI with her boyfriend Boo.

Speaker 2:

I will say this they did a good twist. They did a good twist, did not see it coming. So they did a good job. Surprising me. But other than that, this movie was not good, it was boring.

Speaker 2:

I did not laugh once. I that this movie was not good, it was boring. I did not laugh once. I rolled my eyes a lot. I just didn't enjoy it and I wasn't really expecting to.

Speaker 2:

I tried to give movie. I really really do try to give movies a chance and I tried to give this movie a chance and it just didn't deliver. So I'm gonna give Megan 2.0, a 2.0 out of 5, because I did think the twist with the boyfriend was interesting and that's about it. So I'm giving it a 2.0 out of 5 stumps. So those are my thoughts on F1. Go see it in theaters If you can't see it on the biggest screen, because really it does immerse you in the races and Megan 2.0, don't go see it. Those are my thoughts on those two movies. You can listen to Katie and I's thoughts on Happy Feet on our Christmas movie list. For some reason, this Tuesday and the next Cinema Sunday, I'm going to be talking about Jurassic World Rebirth on the Couch Critic, where every movie gets its close-up, so grab a seat, let the credits play.

Speaker 1:

We'll see you next for cinema saturdays.
